MICHEL SARDABY - BLUE SUNSET

Michel Sardaby was born in 1935 in Martinique. He learned to play the piano when he was 5 years old, in the brasserie of his father in Fort-de-France, where music was constantly played. At the age of 10 Michel was already seen as a piano prodigy, playing fast boogie woogie like no one else. In 1953 the family moved to Paris.  Michel went to the Institut des Arts Appliqués, the Boulle School.  He graduated in 1956 and decided to become a professional jazz pianist.  Throughout the 60s, he played piano with many French (Guy Lafitte ...), European (Rene Thomas ...) and US-expatriate musicians (Dexter Gordon, Sonny Criss, Kenny Clarke, Ben Webster, J.J. Johnson, Chet Baker, Art Taylor, Jimmy Gourley ...).  He has a special feeling for the blues which led to collaboration with Sonny Boy Williamson and T-Bone Walker during their visits to the Old Continent.

Blue Sunset  is the first album Michel Sardaby recorded under his name.  It was recorded in 1965 and produced by fellow West Indian Henri Debs. It can be considered a lost classic piano trio LP.

Michel Sardaby is not a prolific pianist, in terms of recordings.  His discography is limited but of an outstanding level of quality.

DOMINIQUE PIERARD ‘s TINTO ROJO

ON THE MOVE   (Belgium, 1992)

This one is for gypsy swing / guitar fans and in memory of Joop Ayal who recently left this world (and of Bob Dartsch who left us in October last year).

Dominique Pierard is what I would call a fixture of the Brussels musical scene.  A gifted and well-liked Belgian guitar-player who‘s been around since the 70s, he can often be caught playing in and around Brussels (and much further … friends of mine met him in the early 80s  playing Django’s music in a bar in New Orleans … small world!).  He was a member of the famous gypsy string band Waso before forming his own band..

Apart from gypsy swing he also excels in straight jazz and … rockabilly (he is/was lead guitarist of the rockabilly / swing revival band The Dominos, another Brussels fixture).  He is also a member of Bonaventure, featuring longtime buddy, Michel Clement (If you're a Bruxellois around 60 you may remember Tomahawk Blues Band and Sunhouse).  By the way, who remember Sunhouse, a superb fusion band who used to play at the Florio every Sunday night in the mid-seventies? Sunhouse recorded an excellent album for Columbia Belgium, which is still awaiting a re-issue on CD (tracks can be heard on YouTube).   

Of interest too is the presence of Indonesian/Dutch tenor sax, the late Joop Ayal, who plays in a style reminiscent of Ben Webster (My Romance, I remember Ben). He also sings Teran Bulan, a traditional Malaysian song with an interesting story (see Trivia below).

Although most tracks are definitely in the Gypsy Swing tradition, there are a few exceptions: the introspective acoustic ballad “A remark You Made” , the classic Indopop ballad (Teran Bulan) and two tracks with a smooth jazz feel reminiscent of Earl Klugh of the period (it’s 92 remember.  I must say that these two are not especially my cup of tea.

 

Trivia  Teran(g) Bulan is a song with an amazing story.  It was  based on a French melody by  XIXth Century composer Pierre-Jean de Béranger and eventually became the Malaysian National Anthem under the title of Negaraku.  (read the whole amazing story of this song here.

This one is pretty rare although it was re-released in Japan in 1999.  It’s been on Paul D.’s wish-list for a long while.  It’s onxidlib who located a copy by one of his acquaintances and managed to get this excellent rip.

The tracks were not assigned to a specific performer on the sleeve of the original LP but I guess there was little risk of confusing Dauner’s piano trio with Koller’s sax heavy octet.

So what do we have here:

Posts of Sadi's music are among the most popular on this blog. Yes, Fats, we miss you, old man!  We miss not seeing you on the telly anymore, you wouldn't believe the crap they have on these days.

On this LP - as the title implies - the emphasis is on Sadi, the vocalist, entertainer and showman.  But don't forget Sadi the arranger, Sadi the band leader, Sadi the vibist, Sadi the bongoman!  They're all here.

Great Belgian jazz featuring "Little Green Apples" and his monster bongo break intro. With also the jazz dancer "Hep! Hep! The Jumping Jive"

You probably know him best for the Ensadinado LP on MPS, but heavyweight Belgian jazzman & entertainer Fats Sadi also cut some other great albums. 'Swing a little' for example is a jazz record he cut with the cream of Belgian jazz musicians in those days: ao. Jeannot Morales, Nic Fisette, Etienne Verschueren, Roger Van Haverbeke and Freddy Rottier, some of which went to play with Placebo later on.  The music is big band jazz with scat, vibes and some drumbreaks. Some of the arrangements may call to mind the name of Francis Boland, there is a certain kinship, I assume it's the Belgian Touch!

Another curio by Riedel, this time thanks the Quimsy.  An album that will put you back in shape!  Music blogging is good not just for your ears but for your whole body.  Instead of leaving it in the comments of the previous post, I think it deserves a post on its own.

Excellent music as could be expected from such a cast of top-notch musicians.

GEORGE RIEDEL QUINTET

Until recently I don’t think there was much music by Swedish composer / cellist George Riedel floating around the blogsphere.  And suddenly it comes from all directions!

First El Reza sent us the rare RIEDAIGLIA LP – which, by the way, has become  the most visited and downloaded post on this blog!  Merci Reza!

Then about a week ago, a guy named Matthias F provided a copy of Jazz Ballet which was posted on Bacoso's OIR.

And now our good friend onxidlib send us this rare EP dating from 1955, with all the usual suspects you can expect from a Swedish recording of the mid-fifities (Domenrus, Wallin …).

Isn’t music blogging a marvelous media for preserving obscure and forgotten music?

Why then are we considered as vulgar delinquents by Web regulators?   We ain't stealing nothing from no one.

RIP 3 LEGENDS OF BELGIAN JAZZ

ALBERT LANGUE - CHARLIE CALMEYN - JOOP AYAL

Several legends of Belgian Jazz have left us recently for the great Jam Session.

Trumpet player Albert Langue died aged 92 in Mons, he is well remembered for recording with Sydney Bechet the famous (at least in Belgium) folk theme Le Doudou (a carnival song which was the anthem of his native town of Mons, in the coal mining region known as Le Borinage).

Charlie Calmeyn career as a jazzman goes back to the late thirties. He lead for many years the Brussels Big Band - a swing big band in the Basie tradition, featuring some of the better local talents (Edmond Harnie, Al Goyens, Jean Blaton ...).  It was proclaimed European Best Big Band in its style in Paris in 1976.  The Brussels Big Band can be heard on a Vogue LP recorded in 1980.

Joop Ayal was born in Dutch Indonesia.  He arrived in Holland as a stoveaway in 1948 and started working with various  local artists such as Rita Reys.  In 1951, he moved to Brussels, Belgium, where he started playing the baritone sax with Francis BAY in the famous Brussels club Au Gaity.

Until 1965 he stayed clubbing in the city, than started a long collaboration with Flemish television. He played with his quintet at Jazz Middelheim in 1976. 

Joop Ayal received a master's degree in Counterpoint from the Académie Royale de Bruxelles and in Arranging and Orchestration from the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

 He played a.o. with the WASO (Django style band) and the RETRO JAZZ ORCHESTRA. 

Joop AYAL appears on several albums.  In the 90s he was often playing with the little big band of singer/guitarist Vicky Down.

Joop was a great saxman very much influenced by Ben Webster.  Check in on MySpace: and listen to his rendition of I remember Ben (recorded with Waso Quartet).

FUNKY GDR !

Rundfunktanzorchester Berlin ‎– Big Band Aktuell

LP AMIGA ‎– 8 55 568, GDR - 1977

If you like that unique funky European touch that blessed so many European big bands in the early to mid-Seventies, you’ll love this album.  As far as I know, it is the most adventurous album by this GDR big band.  Very original sound, especially on side 2 with tracks like Tiefetal 10 (with some solid alto courtesy of Ernst Ludwig Petrowsky) and “Etude”(with superb electric violin by Hubert Katzenbeier who musta bin listening to lotsa Sugarcane).

This last track is a pure delight for progheads! 

All tracks on side A were composed and arranged by Jerzy Milian.

Here is a contribution from an anonymous visitor who sent us a rip of the this rare album via onxidlib. It is the companion album to the one I posted in December.  The Leo Wright Combo was a Quintet that was built by Leo Wright for a Concert-Tour in the former German Democratic Republic in 1965.

In addition to Wright's excellent work on flute and alto sax, this album is another opportunity to hear the virtuosity and melodic invention of Andre Condouant, probably one of jazz most underrated guitar players.
