HANS KOLLER OCTET / WOLFGANG DAUNER TRIO
JAZZ-STUDIO H.G.B.S. NUMBER ONE
SABA RECORDS, SB 15003(LP) Germany, 1965 (release year)
This one is pretty rare although it was re-released in
Japan in 1999. It’s been on Paul D.’s
wish-list for a long while. It’s onxidlib
who located a copy by one of his acquaintances and managed to get this
excellent rip.
The tracks were not assigned to a specific performer
on the sleeve of the original LP but I guess there was little risk of confusing Dauner’s piano trio with Koller’s sax heavy octet.
So what do we have here:
First of all a superb octet led by Hans Koller and
featuring no less than five saxes:
HANS KOLLER OCTET
Hans Koller : tenor saxophone
Rudi Flierl : tenor saxophone
Karl Drewo : tenor saxophone
Derek Humble: alto
saxophone
Helmut Reinhardt : baritone
saxophone
Hans Hammerschmid : piano
Götz Wendland : bass
Sperie Karas : drums
"Hans Koller Octet" recorded in Baden Baden,
German, January 9, 1962
Then we have the Wolfgang Dauner Trio.
WOLFGANG DAUNER TRIO -
Wolfgang Dauner : piano
Götz Wendland : bass
Kurt Bong : bongo
"Wolfgang Dauner Trio" recorded in
Villingen, German, January 12, 1962
The album was produced, engineered and directored by Hans-Georg
Brunner-Schwer (hence Jazz Studio HGBS).
TRACKS (corrected) : this is the ten tracks LP (the scan from the web is from the 8 tracks version)
01. Ganz Privat (Brunner-Schwer) 3:14
02. It Ain't Necessarily So (George
Gershwin) 5:39
03. Together Again
(Hammerschmid/Zoller) 3:10
04. Oleo (Sonny Rollins) 4:24
05. Racy (Hans Koller) 3:59
06. At The Dark Town Of Strutter's (Sheldon
Brooks) 6:00
07. Five At A Time (Sperie Karas) 2:58
08. Love In Summer (Wolfgang Dauner) 4:10
09. Fips (Helmut Reinhardt) 3:16
10. Cubano Chant (Ray Bryant) 3:30
Trivia: this LP was apparently the first Jazz LP on the Saba label.
