RARITY #51

HANS KOLLER NEW JAZZ STARS
"HANS KOLLER COOL JAZZ"
EP MANHATTAN 66035C (EP)        GERMANY, 1958

Onxidlib sent me a rip of this rare little EP several months ago.  I hesitated a long time before posting it because it was not in too good condition despite onx' efforts to clean it.
But there is only so much one could do and
it is the only occasion probably for most of us to hear this beautiful music ... so here it is.

If anyone has a better copy or the complete Bertelsmanm LP, I'd be delighted to post it.

Albert Mangelsdorff is especially good on these tracks.

Albert Mangelsdorff, trombone
Hans Koller, tenor saxophone
Helmuth Reinhardt, baritone saxophone
Hans Hammerschmid, piano
Peter Trunk, bass
Rudi Sehring, drums

A1. Hard Blues (Mangelsdorff)
A2. Back In Paradise (Hammerschmid)

B.  I'll Close My Eyes (Reid)

Recorded March 26 - 28, 1958 in Baden-Baden, Germany.

Original (?) release on BERTELSMANN 7753 (LP) with seven more titles.

P.S :  at the request of visitors, I am reposting Wolfang Lauth's Life Dance and the last track of Stanley Cowell 's Blues for Viet Cong.

Get' em while it lasts!!!

RARITY #50

NEW SOUND FROM … GERMANY  -  VOL. 5

HANS KOLLER  AND HIS NEW JAZZ STARS

25 CM VOGUE – LD 144     (FRANCE, 1953)

This is the 50th installment in the Rarity Series already.  As the name of the series implies, it is dedicated to rare and often obscure 45 rpm and 25cm, mostly European Jazz  although there have been a few exceptions (e.g. the French EPs of Mickey Baker and Tony Milton, rare but more rock/soul than jazz).  The series would never have reached #50 without the contributions of Paul D. and onxidlib and a few other occasional collaborators.  Viele dank, Merci Beaucoup, Thanks a Lot & Dank U Wel to all of them.

This 50th installment comes from the vault of Paul D.  It is ripped from the original French Vogue 10 inch. 33 1/3 RPM. Paul was adamant that it had never been re-issued but in fact there has been a Japanese facsimile in 1998.  The re-issue was fairly confidential and has been long OOP so I have no second-thought about posting a rip.  It's 60 years old..

The music sounds very West Coast.  Should we call it German Cool?  And if you think it's an oxymoron, just give it a listen!

RARITY # 48

HANS KOLLER'S NEW JAZZ STARS
"JAZZTIME BADEN-BADEN"

BERTELSMANN 7753 (EP) – GERMANY, 1958

Despite being very busy with his house-moving, our man Onxidlib had found the time to sent us this contribution to the discography of the great Hans Koller.  A great session combining the talent of three luminaries of German / Austrian Jazz: Koller, Albert Mangelsdorf and Peter Trunk.

Hope you’ll enjoy this rare EP!

Don’t forget to say a word of encouragement to Onxidlib. He'll need it.  I’ve been moving houses a few times and I do sympathize.  Some people may be happy having their whole music collection in virtual format on a small hard drive.  Others need several cubic meters of cupboards, shelves, boxes and crates to store the damn’ vinyls, CDs, old tapes and cassettes, not to mention the equipment needed to play those things and the books and assorted old musical magazines ...  I guess Onxidlib is one of those, and so am I! Bless our wives!

Personnel
Albert Mangelsdorff, trombone
Hans Koller, tenor saxophone
Helmut Reinhardt, baritone saxophone
Hans Hammerschmid, piano
Peter Trunk, bass
Rudi Sehring, drums

Tracks
1. Goofing (Hammerschmid)  3:45
2. Stardust (Carmichael)   2:59
3. Dandy (Koller)          2:34

RARITY #46

FESTIVAL SPECIAL - FRED BUNGE ENSEMBLE / VERA AUER COMBO / SOUND CAVE COMBO / HELMUT WEGLINSKI QUINTET
EP 45 rpm - Brunswick 10062   Germany, 1956

Fans of rare Eurojazz, rejoice! Our man Onxidlib has unearthed another rare EP on German Brunswick.  It is a compilation of four small combos recorded at the occasion of the 4th German Jazz Festival in 1956.  A few (vaguely) familiar names (at least to me): Jean-Louis Chautemps, and the Belgians (Christian Kellens, Marcel Peeters, Alex Scorier)Helmut Weglinski, we’ve already encountered on the Modern Jazz Studio Nr 1 album.  Fred Bunge played with Kurt Edelhagen band in the 50s.  Vera Auer is a mysterious performer, one of the few females involved in the early days of the European jazz scene (read more here). Fritz Hartschub was a member of the Wolfgang Lauth Sextet posted last year (I was a bit hard on him but I really like his playing here).

A.1         FRED BUNGE ENSEMBLE          Basement party
Fred Bunge (tp) Christian Kellens (tb) Marcel Peeters (as) Alex Scorier (bar) Joe Klimm (p) Herbert Winter (b) Teddy Paris (d)
Concert, Frankfurt/Main, May 21, 1956

A.2.        VERA AUER COMBO       Dot's groovy
Jean-Louis Chautemps (ts) Vera Auer (vib) Klaus Sachs (p) Eddie de Haas (b) Shorty Langenbach (d)
Concert, Frankfurt/Main, May 21, 1956

B.1.        SOUND CAVE COMBO     Cool doodle
Egon Denue (ts) Fritz Hartschuh (vib) Wolfgang Wagner (b) Horst Seidelman (d)
Concert, Frankfurt/Main, May 19, 1956

B.2.        HELMUT WEGLINSKI QUINTET         Avalon
Helmuth Weglinski (vln) Flip Gehring (vib,g) Peter Grzescik (g) Jan Thomes (b) Heinz Hoitz (d)

Tracks 1,2 and 4 recorded on May 21, 1956 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany during the fourth German Jazz Festival.
Track 3 recorded on May 19, 1956 at the same location.

Note: Christian Kellens plays a tuba with five valves in e-flat - which in character and range resembles the bass-trombone.

By popular demand … of one visitor ...  here is a second instalment of unreleased Kleinschuster-Goykovich sessions, this one dating from 1970.

The session was supposedly for a LP but the record never materialised. I got the file from onxidlib who got it from someone else who got it from ... doesn’t matter.  May the gods and related entities bless the good and generous onxidlib for his invaluable contributions to this blog (and may, by the same occasion, the blessing extend to all other generous contributors).

Look at the cast. The names speak for themselves. Need I say more?   Get it while it lasts!

GANZ PRIVAT

HANS KOLLER OCTET / WOLFGANG DAUNER TRIO

JAZZ-STUDIO H.G.B.S. NUMBER ONE

SABA RECORDS, SB 15003(LP)   Germany, 1965 (release year)

This one is pretty rare although it was re-released in Japan in 1999.  It’s been on Paul D.’s wish-list for a long while.  It’s onxidlib who located a copy by one of his acquaintances and managed to get this excellent rip.

The tracks were not assigned to a specific performer on the sleeve of the original LP but I guess there was little risk of confusing Dauner’s piano trio with Koller’s sax heavy octet.
So what do we have here:

First of all a superb octet led by Hans Koller and featuring no less than five saxes:

HANS KOLLER OCTET
Hans Koller    :           tenor saxophone
Rudi Flierl      :           tenor saxophone
Karl Drewo     :           tenor saxophone
Derek Humble:           alto saxophone
Helmut Reinhardt :    baritone saxophone
Hans Hammerschmid :           piano
Götz Wendland :        bass
Sperie Karas : drums

"Hans Koller Octet" recorded in Baden Baden, German, January 9, 1962

Then we have the Wolfgang Dauner Trio.

WOLFGANG DAUNER TRIO -
Wolfgang Dauner :     piano
Götz Wendland :        bass
Kurt Bong :                bongo

"Wolfgang Dauner Trio" recorded in Villingen, German, January 12, 1962

The album was produced, engineered and directored by Hans-Georg Brunner-Schwer (hence Jazz Studio HGBS).

TRACKS (corrected) : this is the ten tracks LP (the scan from the web is from the 8 tracks version)

01. Ganz Privat (Brunner-Schwer)                          3:14
02. It Ain't Necessarily So (George Gershwin)        5:39
03. Together Again (Hammerschmid/Zoller)             3:10
04. Oleo (Sonny Rollins)                                         4:24
05. Racy (Hans Koller)                                           3:59
06. At The Dark Town Of Strutter's (Sheldon Brooks)  6:00
07. Five At A Time (Sperie Karas)                         2:58
08. Love In Summer (Wolfgang Dauner)                 4:10
09. Fips (Helmut Reinhardt)                                   3:16

10. Cubano Chant (Ray Bryant)                            3:30

Trivia: this LP was apparently the first Jazz LP on the Saba label.

UNRELEASED SESSIONS - 01

ERICH KLEINSCHUSTER SEXTETT + DUSKO GOYKOVICH
unreleased session - 1969

Erich Kleinschuster (c.2010)
Onxidlib sent me a good while ago two unreleased Studio sessions from the Erich Kleinschuster Sextet with Dusko Goykovich.

Kleinschuster founded his Sextet in 1966 with a.o. Art Farmer, Fritz Pauer, Jimmy Woode und Erich Bachträgl.. Later he also recorded with Joe Henderson, Carmell Jones, Phil Woods, Clifford Jordan or Jimmy Heath a.o.

Some of these sessions were released as two double CDs (Austria only - now OOP), some never saw the daylight.  These two sessions with Goykovich were among the unreleased recording dates - too good for oblivion ! (another session - the one with John Surman - was posted by onxidlib on Inconstant Sol last year).

Here is the info for the first of the two sessions:

Session 1
ERICH KLEINSCHUSTER SEXTETT + DUSKO GOYKOVICH (VIENNA, 1969)
Dusko Goykovic, trumpet
Robert Politzer, trumpet
Erich Kleinschuster  trombone
Hans Salomon, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet
Fritz Pauer, piano, e-piano
Jimmy Woode, bass
Erich Bachträgl, drums
Fritz Ozmec, percussion

Dusko

1. Formel (E. Kleinschuster) 7:27
2. A Dream Realized (E. Kleinschuster) 5:30
3. Hang My Tears to Dry (E. Kleinschuster) 4:43
4. Bossa for Pavel (D. Gojkovic) 3:24
5. Moustache (D. Gojkovic) 4:14
6. Rhythm Rocket (D. Gojkovic) 2:36

Recorded on December 2, 1969 at the Austrophon Studio, Vienna.

Next one (1970) coming soon.

p.s. It seems we have the same hat.  Perhaps I should start a series on jazz musicians with Berber skull cap. Cheers

BOOGIE FOR EVERYBODY

Blues & Boogie
Miriam Klein - Oscar Klein - Henry Chaix - Bob Carter - Hans Peter Giger ‎
LP Europa – E 385, Germany. 1969

Blues and boogie woogie were among my earliest musical loves and this LP has been a favourite for nearly 40 years.

It’s on the Europa label, a discount label that was often sold in supermarkets.   The same label as the Emil Mangelsdorf album posted earlier and the St Tropez Jazz Octet posted on OIR a good while ago.

It is not even a rare album, it keeps on poppin’ up in used record bins.  I have three or four copies at home, each bought for about 1 Euro.  It probably deserves the title of the Most Overlooked Record– at least in Belgium where nobody seems to have the least idea of the quality of the musicians playing here.

So who do we have here?  Three Swiss, one Austrian and one American-Hawaiian!

Vocal : Swisss vocalist Miriam Klein first came into the public eye when she performed in Paris in the 1950s with Dexter Gordon, Pierre Michelot, Don Byas and Art Simmons. Later she attended Music School in Vienna and went back to Switzerland to work with the ensembles of her husband, trumpeter and guitarist Oscar Klein. It was in the 1960s and 1970 that she became known internationally.  In 1978 her album 'By Myself' was produced by concert management tycoon Horst Lippmann for the L+R label.

Miriam Klein

Guitar, cornet, harmonica: Oscar Klein (5 January 1930 in Graz, Austria – 12 December 2006 in Baden-Württemberg) has, for many decades, been one of the top trad trumpeters/cornetists in Europe. In addition, he was a fine blues guitarist and a good harmonica player. Oscar Klein was an Austrian born jazz trumpeter who also played clarinet, harmonica, and swing guitar. His family fled the Nazis when he was young. He became known for "older jazz" like swing and Dixieland. In the early sixties he joined the famous Dutch Swing College Band in Holland as first trumpeter and he is to be found on several of their recordings. He was also a member of the Tremble Kids (MPS).  He played with Lionel Hampton, Joe Zawinul, Romano Mussolini ... and as a duo with bluesman Philadelphia Jerry Hicks.  In 1996 he was honored by then President Thomas Klestil.
Oscar Klein
Piano: Henri Chaix, (21 February 1925, Geneva, Switzerland, d. 11 June 1999)  played piano from an early age, becoming professional while in his late teens. He played with a number of Swiss bands, eventually becoming a leader in the early 60s. He gained a strong local reputation and during the 50s, 60s and 70s was constantly on call as accompanist for visiting American jazz musicians. Among those with whom he played during these years were Sidney Bechet, Buck Clayton, Rex Stewart and Albert Nicholas. He also played an important role at many Swiss jazz festivals and throughout western and central Europe. A powerful and dynamic player, he displayed a marked penchant for the blues, and his solid accompaniment was of considerable merit. His solos demonstrated an imaginative approach to mainstream jazz. He occasionally played trombone.

Bass : Robert Kahakalau, better known as Bob Carter (b. February 11, 1922, New Haven, Connecticut) was an American jazz bassist and arranger.
Carter learned bass and guitar from his father, a vaudeville performer of Hawaiian heritage. He played in local orchestras from 1937 to 1940, toured from 1940 to 1942 and worked with his own trio in Boston in 1944. In 1944-45 he worked in various groups on 52nd Street in New York City, with Tony Scott, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Stuff Smith, and Charlie Shavers among others. Following time spent playing bebop with Allen Eager and Max Roach in 1946, he worked with Charlie Ventura from 1947 to 1949 and again in 1953-54. In the interim he played with Benny Goodman in 1949-50.

After his second stint with Ventura he studied composition with Wesley LaViolette. Later that decade his arrangements were used by Red Norvo, Bob Harrington, and Shelly Manne. He spent 1957-58 in Hawaii, then returned to New York in 1959, where he played with Bobby Hackett. In the early 1960s, he worked in Germany in the orchestra of Kurt Edelhagen. He did little playing after the end of the 1960s.

Drums :  Hans Peter Giger is a Swiss percussionist and bandleader with a musical career stretching over 50 years. In the sixties he worked as studio-musician in Paris, with Claude Bolling and others.  In then moved to Germany and took part in various experimental Kraut bands and projects (Dzyan, Drum Circus - with Joel Vandroogenbroeck) .  He joined the Albert Mangelsdorff Quintet in 1972. In 1977 he went out on his own with his project, the Family of Percussion, a percussion-only quartet, along with Trilok Gurtu, Doug Hammond and Tom Nicholas.
