I was very fortunate to attend the concert that M'Boom Repercusion gave at the Middelheim Festival in the summer of 1973.

Looking through some old concert memorabilia and archives, I found this folder presenting the band members.

I'm not posting the Strata East album.  It has been posted some years ago on the old Strata East Fan Club blog and copies are probably still floating around.

It was a disappointing album (Max Roach did not want it released), not representative of what I saw and heard at the concert.

If you want to have an idea of what it sounded like, the concert was filmed by the BRT (Flemish Radio & Television).  The video is no longer available on the Canvas website but someone has posted it on YouTube.  

Many thanks to the uploader for salvaging this video.  Wish someone had saved the other Middelheim videos that were on the Canvas website (Nucleus, ... ).

Jean Luc Ponty’s performance in the 1972 Montreux Jazz Festival was on the more experimental side of fusion.  Not the most memorable Ponty’s album but I still prefer it to the more commercial fusion and histrionics he went for later in his career.  This album was released on the short lived Pierre Cardin label, in a sleeve with round corners.

DEUTSCHE JAZZ FESTIVAL BIG BAND  "FRANKFURT, 1970"

Pretty busy these days and not much time for blogging,  Moreover I need to go back home and rip some new material  (I have over 50 LPs never re-issued on CD and never seen in the blogsphere waiting to be cleaned, ripped and posted). That's what I'll do between Xmas and New Year, ripping LPs and drinking muled wine.

Luckily, the one and only onxidlib came to the rescue with another piece of modern archeology, an unreleased live performance of a large German All Stars Big Band recorded in 1970 at the 12th Deutsches Jazz Festival.

Just look at the names, they're all there.  The music is ambitious, very much a reflection of its time.  It means some controled madness - the influence of free jazz is still very prevalent in European jazz of the early seventies, and the band is led by Mr. Albert Mangelsdorff!  But the sun  always shines after the storm.  

For instance the Gunter Lenz's composition "Intoxication" starts in a fairly free manner but rapidly everything falls into place and order succeeds to chaos.    

If you dig seventies progressive big bands, this one 's for you.

I was there for M'Boom, Rollins and Fred Van Hove. Just another long-haired bloke somewhere in the audience (there were a lot of long-haired blokes in the audience in the early seventies).  I saw Nucleus too but I can't remember if it was in Antwerp or somewhere else.

No nonsense, straight ahead, no prisoner taken, live bop session by the cream of the Belgian Boppers, recorded in front of a selected audience featuring several fellow jazz musicians (see below).  If you are a follower of this blog, or of Belgian jazz from the sixties to the  eighties … you probably already know all these guys.  They are all gone now and deeply missed.

The Mozart no longer exists either and is also fondly remembered by all the Brussels jazz aficionados.

If you liked the two live albums by Hugh Brodie posted last month, you’ll probably love this one too!  It's cookin' and steamin' hot!

This album, issued on the short-lived Vogel label, has become pretty rare and has never been re-issued.

Live And Cooking At The Wild Oat
CADENCE JAZZ RECORDS – CJR1004 (LP – USA - 1981)

An early 80's live recording from be-bop saxophonist Hugh Brodie.   Live and Cooking is the title of this LP and that’s really what it’s all about.  100% high octane hard bop!

The backing band is an upstate New York blues quintet called Impulse.  They may have been a blues quintet but they do have real jazz chops.

Five original tunes and an improvised version of Sonny Stitt's "Bud's Blues".  .

This LP has not been re-issued on CD but if you dig the music, I recommend you pay a visit to Hugh Brodie’s website and get his latest CDs.

WESPELAAR SWING FESTIVAL - 2012

It may be a bit late for a post about two concerts that happened several months ago but since a friend sent me this picture she found in a Flemish newspaper (Het Nieuwsblad) showing the Boogieman and his daughter in the crowd at the Wespelaar Swing Festival in late August this year, I guess I have to confirm that we were there, for two evenings. 

The first visit was to catch the Fabulous Thunderbirds – very disappointing, over-amplified, playing so loud the music was not even enjoyable anymore.  I had seen them in New Orleans in the early eighties (Jimmy Vaughan was still in) and it was so much better, one could actually HEAR the music.  Why do they have to play like everyone is stoned deaf nowadays?

The second evening was to catch the Blind Boys of Alabama and it was just pure MAGIC.  When these guys start singing one does feel goose bumps (also known as kiekebich' in Brusseleir).  Fabulous!

GUEUZE 'n BOOGIE

AL COPLEY - Live @ 't LEEUWSKE - 28th June 2011

St Pieters Leeuw is a partly rural village west of Brussels.  The village centre has managed to keep its charm and a unique atmosphere: a beautiful old church and some very friendly cafes on the small cobbled street surrounding the church.  That's where one can find Café Moriau, famous for its traditionnal Gueuze and Kriek (and occasional jazz concerts) and Café 't Leeuwske where I went last night to watch and hear  Al Copley.  Living abroad most of the year, I sometimes forget what a delightful place Belgium could be.  For instance,  one can have the double pleasure of watching / listening to a top-class musical act while drinking some outstanding local beers.   My favourite has always been the Oude Gueze and Kriek ( typical summer beers, very refreshing).  Not always easy to find the real thing, only a handful of small breweries still produce the lambic which is at the base of Gueuze and Kriek.  But in St Pieters Leeuw, you get the real thing; After all, it's the Payottenland, a region that had already inspired Brueghel den Oude and many lesser known painters and poets.  


And yesterday, the Payottenland atmosphere obviously inspired boogie woogie master AL COPLEY (a founding member of Roomful of Blues) who gave a great performance in trio format (piano-contrabass-drums) in Cafe 't Leeuwske.  I've seen Al Copley many times over the year - he's been a regular visitor for some twenty year now and was even resident in Belgium for a few years - but yesterday was one of his better shows.  A small typical Belgian Café, an enthusiastic crowd - some real connaisseurs and some locals who came to have good time, and got lots of it!, but above all, a real piano. Too often nowadays we see blues / boogie pianists playing on electric keyboards that may sound "almost" like a the real thing but almost ain't enough.  

So a great evening of unadultered boogie woogie and - always a crowd pleaser - rock and roll (Copley excels in Jerry Lee's type of rockin' boogie).
