BOURSE AUX DISQUES - PLATENBEURS - RECORDS FAIR

Le SWEET AND HOT organise une BOURSE AUX DISQUES DE JAZZ le samedi 19 mai 2012 de 11h15 à 16h. à la JAZZ STATION, 195 chaussée de Louvain, 1210 Saint-Josse-ten-Noode (en face du boulevard Clovis, entrée derrière le coin par la rue Wauwermans). Bus STIB 29, bus De Lijn 318, 410 (arrêts Clovis). 
Ouverture de la porte à partir de 10h15 pour les vendeurs uniquement

- Si vous avez des disques (78, 45, 33 ou CDs), livres, cassettes (audio ou vidéo), DVD, revues, catalogues, etc. à vendre, apportez-les… Pour une question d'organisation (réservation d'emplacement), nous invitons les vendeurs à bien vouloir confirmer leur participation dès que possible  Table (1m80): € 14.00. Si vous avez moins, participation à négocier.

- Si vous n'avez rien à vendre mais qu'au contraire vous êtes acheteur, ne manquez pas cette occasion unique à Bruxelles (les habitués savent qu'il y a moyen non seulement de faire de très bonnes affaires mais aussi de dégoter des raretés, voire même des "collectors' items").

Faites circuler l'information, avertissez vos amis amateurs de jazz (néophytes ou chevronnés, vendeurs ou acheteurs) .

Vervoer: bereikbaar via bus MIVB 29, bus De Lijn 318, 410 (halte Clovis). Voor de verkopers enkel gaan de deuren open om 10u15.

- Indien u platen (78t, 45t, 33t. of CD's) boeken, audio - of videocassettes, DVD's, magazines, - catalogi, enz… wil verkopen, breng ze mee… Om organisatorische redenen (plaatsreservatie) - verzoeken wij de verkopers zo snel mogelijk hun deelname te willen bevestigen 
 Prijs per tafel (1m80): 14€. Indien u minder dan een tafel nodig heeft, is de prijs overeen te komen.

- Indien u niets te verkopen heeft maar u integendeel koper bent, mag u deze unieke gelegenheid in Brussel niet missen (de getrouwen weten dat er niet enkel zeer goede zaken kunnen worden gedaan maar dat men ook zeldzaamheden of zelfs "collectors' items" op de kop kan tikken.

Theo Jörgensmann Quartet featuring John Thomas

Go Ahead Clarinet

(CPM 4 ST, Germany, 1978)

 A not so common LP by clarinet virtuoso / free improviser Theodor Franz Jörgensmann.  I was not familiar with Jorgensmann's music when I found this LP last year in a second-hand books and records shop.

It did like the title "Porc Binaire Roti (Binary Roasted Pork).  I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the playing.  The music is free but very listenable and even strangely compelling, it surely deserves repeated listening.  An added bonus is the presence of guitarist John Thomas, currently an Associate Professor at Berklee and author of  advanced jazz guitar books and tutorials. 

The album was recorded when Thomas was working in Europe in the late Seventies.

JACK SELS – ORIGINAL STUDIO RECORDINGS (c. 1961)

I haven't been too busy with the blog these last few  weeks, mostly re-uploading and updating old links.  
I also ripped a few obscure LPs that I shall post in the coming weeks. 
But this one comes straight  from Paul D's vault.  Quality rip as usual! 


Saxophonist JACK SELS is one of the legends of Belgian Jazz and probably Antwerp’s greatest contribution to Jazz (although there is a whole new generation who would probably deserve that title, starting with X-Legged Sally and Flat Earth Society  ... yes, I know Peter Vermeersch was born in Waregem, not in Antwerp ...).

If you have seen the film JUST FRIENDS by Belgian Director Marc-Henri Wajnberg (1992), you probably know the story of the Antwerp tenor player unloading shipments of bananas from the Belgian Congo by day and blowing his horn in smoky taverns by night.  The character in the film was loosely based on Jack Sels’ real life story.

This fairly rare LP is of interest for several reasons.  

First of all because Jack Sels did not record a lot so his few recordings are to be treasured. 

The second reason is because this album features what is probably  the very first phonographic trace of a 17-year old aspiring jazz guitarist with a bright future, PhilipCatherine’

The thirds reason is the fourth track on side B: a lttle-known theme by Fats Sadi played by a quintet featuring Fats Sadi (vibes), Rene Thomas (guitar), Wallace Bishop (drums), an unknown pianist and an unknown bass player – most probably Benoit Quersin.  But no trace of Jack Sels on this track ….

 The sides with Jack Sels were recorded in Brussels circa September 19, 1961.

The last track of B side is a bit of a mystery, probably dating from 1961 too.

Four tracks wirh Lou Bennett and Philip Catherine were first issued as and EP under the name JACK SEL(L)S JAZZ.

 They were re-issued in 1966 on a Dutch Relax LP entitled Sax Appeal , which has become a bit of a collector’s item  for its “calendar girl” cover.

I was listening to this album while reposting.  It's pretty good, I recommend it if you're into  adventurous early seventies jazz rock big bands. No vocals, all instrumentals.  Great players.  Think Don Ellis, Maynard Ferguson and a few others.    (rip thanks to Leonard @Redtelephone66).

"Innovation en jazz N°2" 

Jacques Pelzer Modern Jazz  6tet

(Belgium, 1955)

 This rare 10” was released in 1955 as part of the “Innovation en Jazz” series, a series sponsored by the department store “A l’Innovation”. 

Jacques Pelzer (1924-1994) was one of the most important figures in Belgian jazz history.

He was born in Liège and played the harmonica as a kid and switched to flute, alto & soprano saxophone later on.

In the late 1940s, he joined the legendary Bob Shots (lead by Bobby Jaspar), one of the very first (if not the first) groups in Europe to play be-bop. It’s at this time that Pelzer gets to know the music of Charlie Parker, who will remain one of his biggest influences.

In the 1950s, Pelzer became one of the leading jazzmen in Belgium, playing on the ‘Jazz For Moderns’ (Fiesta) and ‘Innovation en Jazz’ (Innovation) 10” records, as well as the ‘Jazz In Little Belgium’ 10” that was released for the ‘58 World Expo in Brussels.

 In the following decade, he plays with Chet Baker, one of his best friends, in the United States. It is through a connection of Chet Baker, that Jacques Pelzer records some sessions in Italy in the sixties: First an ep called ‘Amedeo Tommasi Trio presents Jacques Pelzer’ (1960 - Jazz In Italy vol. 10) and later an lp with a quartet under his own name: ‘Jacques Pelzer Quartet ft. Dino Piana (Jazz in Italy vol. 13 - reissued in 2009 by Rearward-Schema).

In the 1970s, he recorded two live lp’s: one with the legendary jazz fusion group ‘Open Sky Unit’ (with his cousin Steve Houben on sax and his daughter Micheline Pelzer on drums), and one with the Jacques & Micheline Pelzer Quartet. Both records were released on a tiny label called Duchesne and are now really rare collector’s items.
